KVC Kansas is a private, nonprofit organization that serves over 12,000 children, teens and adults each year. Our team of caring professionals provides family strengthening and foster care prevention services, foster care case management, family reunification services, foster family recruitment and support, kinship care, adoption, aftercare, outpatient therapy and more.

At KVC Kansas, your practicum or internship is more than a requirement; it’s a chance to make a difference. As a student, you will experience real-world experience serving children, teens and families across Kansas while learning from compassionate professionals in child welfare and behavioral health.
Every year, KVC Kansas helps more than 12,000 children and families find safety, connection, and hope. As part of the KVC Health Systems network, you’ll be immersed in a mission-driven environment that values compassion, learning, and innovation.
What You’ll Learn
Our internships and practicums give students firsthand experience in the intersection of social work, behavioral health and family support, where government, nonprofit and higher education come together. You’ll learn how evidence-based, trauma-informed practices change lives every day.
What a KVC Kansas Internship/Practicum Offers
- Professional mentorship from experienced KVC staff across child welfare and behavioral health fields
- Hands-on experience applying classroom learning to real-world challenges
- Skill development in case management, family engagement, crisis intervention, and therapy techniques
- Flexible scheduling to meet program requirements, including evening or weekend appointments with families
- Exposure to trauma-informed models like Trauma Systems Therapy (TST) and Parent Management Training (PMT)
Areas of Focus
- Child Welfare & Case Management – Support children and families on their path to safety and stability
- Foster & Kinship Care – Help caregivers and relatives provide nurturing homes
- Adoption Services – Assist children and families seeking permanent, loving connections
- Family Strengthening & Prevention – Work with families to prevent out-of-home placements
- Therapeutic & Behavioral Health Services – Learn in outpatient or in-home settings, supporting youth and families with mental health needs
- Independent Living Services – Help young adults prepare for life beyond care
Qualifications for Students to Be Considered
- A passion for helping children and families thrive
- Enrollment in an accredited degree program in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Family Therapy, Human Services or related fields
- Completion of orientation and training requirements
- Valid driver’s license, auto insurance and reliable transportation
- Flexibility for evening or weekend appointments when needed

All interns must complete pre-employment screening requirements, including background checks, drug screening, and TB testing
